Julie Killian's Statement on Keeping our Families and Children Safe
“As a mother of five, with three still in school, I am horrified by the latest tragic shooting today at Central Michigan University, right on the heels of the Parkland tragedy. We must take action."
“New York already has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation: AR-15s are already banned. In order to keep our children safer and guns out of the wrong hands, we need to have common sense laws including universal background checks, banning bump stocks and fully automatic weapons and raising the age to buy a firearm to 21.
“I believe there must be an effective process through which judges can ensure individuals who are a danger to themselves or others do not have access to firearms, and those who have severe mental illness receive immediate treatment to keep our families safe. In the State Senate, I will also support legislation that provides funding for local school districts to invest in security equipment and school resource officers to help secure school infrastructure.
“We must ensure that local, state and federal law enforcement are coordinating and that they’re communicating with our schools and mental health providers.
“Government’s primary role is the safety and security of its citizens, and we must all work together to keep our children and families safe.”
